This poem was written by an Anglican Priest, Harry Wiggett, after a directive was sent to all clergy of the Diocese of Cape Town stating that the Bishop and Archdeacon would be responsible for organizing clergy funerals
And in my dying
let me die as me.
Not me in your closed
claustrophobic
ecclesiastic
clerical box
collared with the chain
of a priestly pedigree
paced by purple princes to the grave.
Box me in a carpenter’s cot.
Coffin my worked-out earthly frame
bearing no honours
nor reverend titles
but a child of God’s baptismal name.
Follow and follow me lightly
lovingly
into the kindly night –
Let me go gently
in the love of my loved ones
into my Father’s Son’s glorious light.

As I lay down,
I rest:
my hopes, my fears
my longings, my thankfulness
my being, my non-being
my anxieties, my faith
my decisions, my indecisions
my work, my contemplation
that which is complete
that which is incomplete
my seeing, my darkness
my hearing, my deafness
my feeling, my hardness
my openness, my closedness
my past, my future
myself in the Earth and the Earth in me.

I offer facilitation for all of the moving dramas of human life including dying and death.
I have helped people with services in their homes, at Kirstenbosch, on the beach, in the Hells' Angels' club house ... in fact, in the same places that I have done weddings! Of course the places that are meaningful in our living are also important to us and our loved ones in our dying.
I want to travel this journey with you in a way that respects who you are and how you live. |
