Unconditional Acceptance -

When we do any kind of ceremony of belonging, welcome or celebration for a small child we are making a radical statement of unconditional acceptance.

You see, while we may begin to relate to a baby from very early on we do not know what their personality will be, what they will do for fun, who they will love, what their sexual orientation or taste in music will be.

And yet, we declare them welcome, celebrated, belonging and loved.

So in their baptism, naming, welcoming, whatever, we are in effect committing ourselves to love them AS THEY ARE without trying to make them in our image. Wow!

Richard Dawkins -

I want everybody to flinch whenever we hear a phrase such as ‘Catholic child’ or ‘Muslim child’. Speak of a ‘child of Catholic parents’ if you like; but if you hear anybody speak of a ‘Catholic child’, stop them and politely point out that children are too young to know where they stand on such issues, just as they are too young to know where they stand on economics or politics.
